KEXP is nice
I’ve been listening to the Morning Show on KEXP and trying to play “name that band” makes me realize I’m not too far out of the loop as far as new music goes.
It’s not all new music, and today I heard the Modern Lovers’ Roadrunner for the first time. They sing about roadrunners, Massachusetts, Stop & Shop, and name check themselves. It is wonderful. I also found myself thinking “this isn’t bad… who is… THIS IS ARCADE FIRE.” I don’t like Arcade Fire on principle. It is an irrational principle I can’t explain, but something’s off about them. If I were Bruce Springsteen I wouldn’t bring Arcade Fire on stage with me. Win Butler is trying to steal his soul.
I also heard Lately and the title track from the new New Helio Sequence album, Keep Your Eyes Ahead (1/29). Stereogum mentions Brandon’s long break due to vocal problems and his voice is notably different on this album. Previously his voice sounded a bit strained and he either resorted to yelling or whispering. I liked the affect it had on their overall sound. I’m looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.
