Game, Set, & Match Crimes and Misdemeanors
Another indie film watched while in LA was ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ and I gotta say… still not a Woody Allen fan. I liked Scarlett Johansson in ‘Match Point’ but Woody Allen is obsessed with her.
A movie that has MGM and The Weinstein Company behind them from the greenlight isn’t indie. I also think that Woody Allen’s movies have been targeting a mainstream audience almost to the detriment of his fans. His name is barely mentioned in mass marketing materials for the movie. Like Diane Keaton in the ’70s, there’s a 50/50 chance a Scarlet Johannson movie is also a Woody Allen movie. He knows what he likes.
I liked ‘Match Point’ a lot because It was so different than anything else he’s done before. This was not classic Woody Allen, but close enough to leave a bad tasty in my mouth after I left the theater.
I hated Match Point, but if you liked it I’d reccommend Crimes and Misdemeanors. When I saw Match Point I felt like I was watching a B-movie version of Crimes and Misdemeanors.
